Biografie van Eric Clapton  

Eric Clapton, een van de grootste gitaristen aller tijden, werd geboren op **30 maart 1945** in Ripley, Surrey, Engeland. Zijn vader, de Canadese militair Edward Walter Fryer, was al getrouwd en keerde terug naar Canada voordat Eric werd geboren. Zijn moeder, Patricia Molly Clapton, was destijds slechts 16 jaar oud. Eric werd opgevoed door zijn grootouders en groeide op in de veronderstelling dat zijn moeder zijn zus was. Pas op zijn negende ontdekte hij de waarheid over zijn familie.  

De Eerste Stappen in de Muziek  

Eric was een stille en teruggetrokken jongen, maar de opkomst van rock-‘n-roll in de jaren ‘50 inspireerde hem om gitaar te leren spelen. Op zijn 13e verjaardag kreeg hij zijn eerste gitaar en begon hij zichzelf te trainen, waarbij hij zich vooral richtte op bluesmuziek. Zijn liefde voor de blues bleef de rode draad in zijn carrière.  

Bands en Doorbraak  

- **The Roosters (1963):** Clapton’s eerste band was een kortstondige bluesgroep.  

- **Casey Jones & The Engineers:** Clapton speelde slechts enkele weken in deze band.  

- **The Yardbirds (1963-1965):** Hier maakte Clapton naam als "Slowhand" dankzij zijn virtuoze spel. Hij verliet de band omdat ze zich meer op popmuziek richtten.  

- **John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers (1965-1966):** Hier ontplooide Clapton zijn talent volledig en werd hij erkend als een meester van de bluesgitaar.  

Cream en Internationaal Succes  

In 1966 richtte Clapton samen met **Jack Bruce** en **Ginger Baker** de legendarische band *Cream* op. Cream combineerde blues, rock en jazz en stond bekend om hun lange, geïmproviseerde optredens. Hun hits zoals **"Sunshine of Your Love"** en **"White Room"** maakten hen immens populair. Ondanks hun succes duurde de band slechts twee jaar door artistieke en persoonlijke conflicten.  

Blind Faith en Derek and the Dominos  

Na Cream richtte Clapton **Blind Faith** op, samen met Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker en Rick Grech. Deze supergroep bracht slechts één album uit voordat Clapton zich terugtrok. Daarna speelde hij met **Delaney & Bonnie and Friends**, wat zijn stijl beïnvloedde.  

In 1970 richtte Clapton **Derek and the Dominos** op en bracht het iconische album *Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs* uit. De titeltrack **"Layla"** werd geïnspireerd door zijn onbeantwoorde liefde voor Pattie Boyd, destijds de vrouw van zijn vriend George Harrison.  

Persoonlijke Strijd en Herstel  

Clapton worstelde in de jaren ‘70 met een heroïneverslaving, maar met hulp van vrienden zoals Pete Townshend van *The Who* overwon hij zijn verslaving. Hij hervond zijn creatieve kracht en verlegde zijn focus naar eenvoudiger liedjes. In 1978 trouwde hij met Pattie Boyd.  

Tragiek en "Tears in Heaven"  

De jaren ‘90 brachten zowel succes als tragedie. In 1991 verloor Clapton vrienden, waaronder Stevie Ray Vaughan, bij een vliegtuigongeluk. Kort daarna overleed zijn vierjarige zoon Conor na een val uit een raam. Clapton verwerkte dit immense verdriet in het prachtige **"Tears in Heaven"**, een van zijn meest persoonlijke en ontroerende nummers.  

Nalatenschap  

Met meer dan zes decennia in de muziekindustrie is Eric Clapton een van de meest gerespecteerde en invloedrijke gitaristen ooit. Hij staat bekend om zijn meeslepende gitaarspel en zijn diepgaande bijdrage aan blues- en rockmuziek. Clapton heeft meerdere Grammy Awards gewonnen en is de enige artiest die driemaal is opgenomen in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: als soloartiest, en als lid van zowel *The Yardbirds* als *Cream*.  

Bijnaam: "Slowhand"  

Zijn bijnaam "Slowhand" kreeg hij vanwege het trage handgeklap van het publiek tijdens optredens, terwijl Clapton ter plekke een gebroken snaar verving.  

Met onvergetelijke hits zoals "Layla", "Wonderful Tonight", en "Tears in Heaven" blijft Eric Clapton een onmisbare naam in de muziekgeschiedenis.
